Apart from the precise information that showed that
he was commissioned within the Oguz State around the Lake Aral, there is not any
information about him. Dokak came from a family that maintained the position of a chief
from of old. As a matter of fact, the historical resources pertaining to even the period
of Tugrul Bey were in agreement when dealing with the nobleness of Dokak family.
It
has been alleged that Dokak and his subject groups were under the dominion of
Khazar-Turkish State while they resided in their homelands located in the north of Lake
Aral. Nevertheless, this subjection should be doubted considering that the Khazar State
was suffering from great difficulties in those periods and this state even had to
collaborate and make an alliance with their neighbouring Oguz people due to the pressure
of Pecenek people.
It
was generally agreed that Dokak who was the commander of Oguz people in Kipchak steppe
lands must have been an influential administrator within Oguz State or he represented a
federated power in the same state. As a matter of fact, it has been understood from his
position in the state administration that he was the most significant high-ranking
character following Yabgu in Oguz State. Dokak had opposed to an expedition that the Yabgu
wanted to organise upon a Turkish group. His face was injured in the course of a struggle
that resulted from the aforesaid reason but Yabgu fell down from his horse when Dokak hit
him with an iron club. Some resources that dealt with this struggle have indicated that
this Oguz commander was the protector of Islam since he had obstructed the military
expedition organised against the Islam countries.
But
in those periods, the religious positions of Kinik branch together with the other Oguz
people have not been clearly defined yet. There were some allegations that asserted that
Seljuk family had adopted Christianity or Judaism due to the existence of some names such
as Israel, Michael, etc. in the Seljuk family. These allegations were only considered as
the suppositions that were not based on strong grounds. Oguz people had started to become
Muslim since the second half of the century X and Seljuk was considered as the first
Muslim person from Dokak lineage. Due to these reasons, it was alleged that Dokak had some
relations with the religion of Islam. We cannot accept this allegation. The conviction
that the Seljuk family were still the believers of the ancient Turkish faith in those
years is probably much appropriate and accurate.
