The First Military
Expeditions and Conquests |
When Sultan Alp Arslan got rid of his other
rivals that alleged for the right of enthronement, he started his military expeditions and
he set in motion from the city of Rey towards the direction of west (22nd February 1064).
This first expedition of Sultan was towards the Eastern Anatolia that was under the
dominion of Georgia and the Byzantine. He was accompanied by his son, Melikshah and his
Vizier, Nizam ul-Mulk. Sultan advanced towards the region of Ani and Kars that was under
the dominion of the Byzantine and invaded Ani. Gagik Abas who was the king of the Kars
region could not find a way and he had to submit to the sultan. The conquest of Ani by Alp
Arslan had caused great joy and delight in the Islam world and the caliph, bi-Emrillah had
entitled him with the title of Ebu'l-Feth (1064).
