Pursuant to the death of Sultan Melikshah, his wife,
Terken Hatun realised the fulfilment of homage for emirs and the verification of them by
the caliph through the treasure in her own possession. Then, she was able to deliver
prayers in Baghdad in the name of his son, Mahmud who was four years old (25th November
1092). Terken Hatun was not contented with these events, and sent the Emir Kur-Boga to
catch the crown prince Berkyaruk who was in Isfahan then. She followed this emir with the
army. The supporters of Nizam ul-Mulk (Nizamiye) took Berkyaruk from Isfahan and declared
him as the sultan in the city of Rey in the same year. There was a severe war against the two
parties that desired to capture the throne of the Seljuk State. Berkyaruk won this war
when some of the emirs and soldiers in the army of Terken Hatun took side with him
(January 1093). Terken Hatun and Mahmud retreated to Isfahan. Berkyaruk besieged them in
this city for a long time. As a result, they made an agreement providing that Isfahan and
Fars would be abandoned to Terken Hatun and her son, Mahmud and the sultanate of Berkyaruk
and his domination in the rest of the cities would be recognised.
