Sencer's Policy in the West

Abbasi Caliph Mustersid Billah who wanted to reinforce his position in the political field regulated his relations with Mahmud who was the sultan of Iraq Seljuks State in a proper order. Furthermore, these two persons had established an alliance and decided to fight against Sultan Sencer. When Sultan Sencer got news about this incident, he immediately wrote a letter to Mahmud and wanted him to get rid of this alliance and his demands was fulfilled. As it can be understood from the following events, Mahmud seemed to have recognised the political dominion of the caliphate in Baghdad (1126). This situation obliged Sultan Sencer to make a military expedition in order to organise his works and affairs in the west. Therefore, he invited Mahmud to the city of Rey. As a result, he made a negotiation with his nephew in the aforesaid city and he returned from this meeting in a satisfied manner (1128). After a while, when Mahmud was to set in motion in order to dismiss the Caliph Mustersid, he died (10th September 1131).

Upon the death of Sultan Mahmud, there was some civil turmoil that aroused in the western section of the Seljuk State. Mahmud's son, Davud was enthroned to the sultanate of Iraq Seljuks State without the consent of Sultan Sencer, and his uncle, Mes'ud had opposed to this enthronement. Seljuk-shah was also involved in the struggles for sultanate between Davud-Mes'ud. Before long, Sultan Sencer advanced towards the west in order to resolve this complicated situation and he came to the city of Rey. His nominate for the throne of Irak Seljuks State was his nephew, Tugrul. Then, Mes'ud, Seljuk-shah and the Caliph Mustersid preferred to collaborate.

Sultan Sencer defeated the Ruler Mes'ud and his allies in Dinever (26th May 1132) and he enthroned Tugrul to the reign of the Iraq Seljuks State. However, upon the death of Tugrul within a short period, Mes'ud became the Sultan of Iraq Seljuks (1134). Sultan Sencer must have understood that it was no use to intervene in this state for the second time, so he accepted the enthronement of Mes'ud without his approval. Mes'ud who did not want to yield and submit to Sultan Sencer had been under the domination of Seljuk emirs. This situation led Sultan Sencer to organise a military expedition to the west for the last time. He met with Mes'ud in the city of Rey and he was satisfied with the expressions stated by Mes'ud. Then, he returned to Khorasan (1150).
