A Turkish captain and vizier who demonstrated mythical heroism in marine
wars.
Algerian Ghazi Hasan Pasha was born in Gelibolu in
1710. Since he lived in Algeria for a long time and since he was given the title of
“Algerian Uncle”, he is called Algerian. He was a very active boy in his childhood and
youth who intimidated everybody with his naughtiness and toughness.
Hasan got used to seamanship by sailing around on
trade ships of merchant Hasan Aga. Then he became a Janissary. He mingled in Belgrade
expedition. He became famous with his courage in Morava and Hisarcık wars. He started
seamanship again after returning from the war.
They had extended ramps to one of the enemy ships
when he was in an Algerian ship. When Hasan jumped into the enemy ship, his ship separated
due to the effect of waves. Hasan was left surrounded by enemies with swords and daggers.
Hasan killed about fifteen crews alone and locked others in the granary. When his ship
extended the ramp again, they saw that he had captured the ship alone. They gave the ship
to him. They raised him among the “Uncles”. He become more and more famous. When
Algerian Pasha began to get jealous of him, Hasan, seeing that his life was in danger,
escaped to Spain. He went to Istanbul with the help of the King. He was admitted among the
captains in Istanbul.
- He burned two Russian
ships by approaching his burning ship to the ship of the Russian admiral during the
Çeşme marine war we were defeated in 1770. He dived into the sea wounded and his sword
in his mouth and swam to the shore. He was about sixty years old when he did that. This
defeat effected him much. He attacked on the Russians in Limni island to take revenge and
took the island back defeating them. What he did made him more famous. He was promoted to
Pasha. He was vended in the title of Ghazi with a golden wreath. He became the Captain of
the Sea (Admiral) in a short time.

Hasan Pasha, who died in Şumnu when he was 80 years old, was a hero Turk both on land and
in the sea.
