- He is the son of
Ekber, one of Delhi Turkish Indian rulers. His real name is Selim. He ascended the throne
upon his father’s death with Nureddin Cihangir title in 1605. He was a just ruler, but
he was too fond of alcoholic drinks. Therefore, during his sultanate of 22 years, neither
any military success was obtained nor any positive activities were held. Cihangir’s
education was not high. His primary interests were science and hunting. Since his
government skills were poor, he was influenced by his environment. His wife Nurcihan had
the highest influence and power on him. The first husband of Nurcihan was Ali Kulu Bey
Ustaclu. Upon his being murdered, Nurcihan sought protection in the palace of the
stepmother of Cihangir. Cihangir saw and loved him there. Nurcihan gave birth to no
children from Ccihangir. She married her daughter from her first husband to the youngest
son of Cihangir, Şehriyar and worked really hard to enthrone her bridegroom. Such
condition led to fights with catastrophic effects for India between Nurcihan and Hurrem,
one of sons of Cihangir.
The most important events of Cihangir’s time was the rebel of Dekkens, seizure of
Kandahar by Shah Abbas, awarding of the right to trade in Agra and Lahor cities to England
by giving Surat port. In the last years of Cihangir’s rule, important incidents took
place. Cihangir was taken captive by Bengal Governor Mehabet Khan rising during such
incidents and remained captive for about one year. Although he was rescued from captivity
by his wife Nurcihan, he died on the way from Kashmir to Lahore on 7 October 1627.
Cihangir was not a bad administrator and weighed
public works and constructed wooded roads between Agra and Etek and Bengal and signal
towers and watery arbors each three kilometers between Agra and Lahore. He has a book
named "Tüzük-i Cihangir (By-laws of Cihangir)”.
Cihangir had five sons and two daughters. His biggest son, Hüsrev, was put into prison
because of his rebel, and died in prison in Dekkan. The second, Perviz also died when his
father was alive. Sultan Hürrem succeeded to the throne after his father with
“Şahcihan” name. Şahcihandar, who was born when Cihangir ascended the throne was
mentally retarded from birth. Şehtiyar, a low prince, rebelled to succeed to the throne
after his father’s death, but he was arrested and executed.
