His real name is Mehmet. He lived between 1491 and 1575.
He is one of the greatest religious scholars of his day who worked as Sheik of Islam in
times of Suleyman the Magnificent and Selim the 2nd for about twenty seven years. Since
his father, Sheik Muhiddin Mustafa, is from İmadiye, some call him İmadi.
He was born in Muderris village near Istanbul. He became a scholar after learning from his
father and the scholars of his times, especially great scholar of Islam, Sheik of Islam
Ibni Kemal. He became the Sheik of Islam in 1548 after he carried out the duties of Bursa
and Istanbul Cadi, and Thrace Commander.
He held this position for nearly twenty two years in Suleyman the Magnificent’s term and
for nearly six years during the term of Sultan Selim the 2nd.
He passed away in 1575 when he was eighty four and was buried next to the school he
constructed in the vicinity of Eyup. He is one of the most important sheiks of Islam of
Ottomans with his character and knowledge.
His Koran Commentary named İrşâdü Akl-ı Selîm and his juridical decisions are
famous. He became famous with his ethics and virtue as if a model.
When he died, his funeral prayer was also performed separately by the people of Mecca and
Medina.
- He left a mosque
in Uskup and a Turkish bath in Istanbul and one of the famous avenues of Istanbul bears
his name. Just as his poems in Turkish are smooth and strong, his poems in Arabic are also
considered among the most successful works of Arabic literature.
