HODJA ISHAK EFFENDI        


       Hodja Ishak Effendi was born in Narda town of Yanya. The exact year of his birth is not known. He died in 1834. Hodja Ishak Effendi is a Turkish scholar who served much in spreading of technical knowledge in the country in early 19th century.

       Hodja Ishak was brought up with a high education. His memory as well as his intelligence were very high. He had skills about mathematics and language. He knew languages such as Turkish, Arabic, Persian, Greek, French, Latin and Hebrew very well.

       He became a hodja in Engineers' School in 1815. He conducted the post of translator of Royal Divan and similar civil posts. However, his greatest service was his efforts to spread technical knowledge in the country. He wrote about eleven books in technical field. His most important book is a mathematics book consisting of four volumes named Mecmua-i Ulûm-u Riyâziye. His other books are on physics, chemistry, geometry and military engineering knowledge. He invented many chemical and physical terms.

       Hodja Ishak served the country much by checking and redirecting the weapons and bullets made in the Engineering School and Tophane and the buildings and military fortifications in several places. He loved working very much and wanted new information and ideas to reach the country. Hodja Ishak Effendi has in important role in the technical history of our country.
