The Lezghis |
They live
in the southwest of Daghestan and also spead out to the middle and upper area of Samur
river and Samahi zone. They are mixed with the Azeris in the east and southeast. They are
neighbours with Darghins, Laks and Avras in the north and northwest. Naturally they speak
Turkish. They are consisted of sub-groups such as Rutul, Khutin, Agul, Budukh, Dzekh,
Tabasaran, Tsakhur, Udi ve Khinalug. Among these the Khurins and Tabasarans are the
most crowded groups. A.Cevdet Pasha writes the population of Lezghis as 50.000 home
including the Turkish population living amoung them. On the other hand Orsolle claims the
population as 560.000. The Lezghis, Checens and Avars are pure Turanian groups and the
loyal supporters of Sheikh Shamil.
