Figurative
stone sculpturing progressed by the effect of Muslim Turks in Daghestan between 11th –
14th centuries. It is estimated that the center of this discipline is little Kubachi town.
Most of the works are exhibited in museums in Leningrad, Louvre and the USA. Kubaçhi is
also used for a kind of Islamic ceramic objects made in Iran between 14th and 16th
centuries. Carpentry and iron works are among the handicraft of Daghestan.
The handicraft is specialized in Kubachi. Some were
specialized in production, where some others in ornamentation and painting. Either boy or
girl, children were also trained in handicraft. Balhar village is specialized in
earthenware pots. But only women work in this job. Men help them only for finding suitable
soil. Girls are trained by their mothers from early years in their lives. But nowadays
this handicraft Balhar has lost its popularity.
Tabasaran people have a special place in handicraft.
Women in Tabasaran are famous of the high quality carpets for many years. In original
Tabasaran’s Safar-Çeçne, Murad-Çeçne, Vartar-Çeçne, Sabyat-Çeçne styles, the
richness of nature are ornamented on these carpets which have natural colours of the
nature as well.
