According to
1989 figures, in Daghestan there are 600 middle schools, 27 technical colleges and five
highschools affiliated to Daghestan State Univesity. Positive science and materialistic
philosophy were of great importance during soviet period and ateism classes were place in
every level of schools. On the other hand, religions training were neglected. These
policies have an important effect on the disasters and difficulties that Daghestan faces
today, such as alcoholism, murder, burglary, suicide, divorce and similar social and moral
depressions as well as economical crisis. Now, almost everything stays the same but
education which has also lost its prestige. Turkish
private investors are interested in educational investments in Daghestan. Businessmen from
Antalya and Bursa has founded four highschools and a faculty (Derbent Humanitarian
Institute) in Mohackale, Derbent and Botlih cities. These schools give education in
Turkish and most of their professors are from Turkey. These schools gained the interest
and respect of native inhabitants with their high quality education, and act as a bridge
between Turkey and Caucasian countries.
