Geographical Position
of Hakasia Republic |
With its capital of Abakan, the Hakasia Republic is
located within the Western half of the wide Minusin Basin in the upper section of Yenisey
River. Its surface area is 61.900 km2. Abakan Stream, one of the branches of Yenisey River
passes through the region. In the south of the valley, there are Western Sayan Mountains
that have an altitude of 2.930 m. in Karagash Mountain. The highest point of Abakan and
Alatau in the north is Verni Zub with the height of 2.178 m. The dominant climate in the
closed basin is an arid and hard continental climate. Therefore, the lower sections are
covered with steppes. The mountainous sections are covered with forests of pine, fir and
spruce trees. The wide steppe lands have been cultivated for agriculture since 1954.
