       Geographical Position
It is located in the western half of the wide Minusinsk Basin on the upper section of Yenisey River. One of the branches of Yenisey River called as Abakan River passes through the middle of the region. There are West Sayan Mountains on the south of the valley of the river that ascends to the altitude of 2.930 m with the Karagoş Mountain. The highest point of Abakan on the north and Kuznetsk Alatau Mountains is Verhni Zub with the height of 2.178 m. The dominant climate in the closed basin is and arid and hard continental climate. Therefore, the lower sections are covered with steppes and forests. But most of untouched and uncultivated lands have been opened for agriculture since the year of 1954. The mountains are covered with the forests of pine, fir and spruce trees.

       Administrative Sructure

       Its administrative structure is located in the city of Minusinsk, out of Abakan. This region located in the South East Siberia is connected to the province of Krasnoyarks in Russia. It had joined to Russia in the course of its formation and in the 18th century, and it has become an Autonomous Region in 1930.

       Economy

       Hakas Autonomous Region is rich in economic resources such as coal, iron, gold, marble, etc. as industrial raw materials. Furthermore, the timber production industry is also highly developed. Its economy is based on agriculture and stockbreeding. The harvest of plants has a sufficient level. Breeding of sheep and goats is still a significant economic resource. The irrigation projects that have recently been carried out in the lower sections have increased the number of animals fed in the pastures, the surface area of the arable fields and the agricultural production of particularly wheat, oats, maize and potatoes. Copper mining that was an effective factor for the Russian settlement in the region maintains its importance since the 18th century. There are rich iron seams in Abakan and Teya; gold measure in the upper Çulım, coal seams in Çemogorsk, and barite in Aksiz. Moreover, there are copper-tungsten beds in the region. The forests are an important source of timber. In the beginning of 1980s, it was planned that the proper energy for the industries in the Minusinsk Basin will be generated from the power station with the capacity of 6.400 megawatt built in Sayanagorsk over the Yenisey River and this power station meets the need for electrical energy.

       Education

       There are 269 secondary schools, 7 Kindergartens and 1 university in Hakasia. There are 770 preschool students in the kindergartens, 91 thousands of students in the Secondary schools, and 6500 students in the university of the country. The educational system is under the possession of the state. Annually 150 books, 1 magazine and 1 newspaper are published in this region. There are 250 libraries, 1 museum, 1 theatre, and 280 clubs in this region.
